Hello hiring manager and/or team member!

I'm Skylar, a 23 year old programmer currently living in Cedar Park, Texas. I am writing to express my interest in your open developer position.

As a software enthusiast, my main area of expertise is frontend web development using modern technologies such as TypeScript, SCSS, and React. During my year as a frontend web developer, I was part of a team working on the internal dashboard/management software used by the lottery of several U.S. states. There, my responsibilities included building and testing new features and components which complied with a set of written requirements, tracking down and fixing bugs of varying severity as described in their issue tracker, and collaborating with a backend team to ensure my changes would properly integrate with the program's data flow.

In the years since then I have forayed into several other software development worlds including mobile app development using React Native, backend devlopment on the JVM, and even the creation of command line tools using the excellent Rust language (among others).

Over time, taking on these projects has helped me gain a better understanding of the development process, good software design, and tradeoffs between many related tools and methodologies. This is apparent in each of my recent projects, which include a full-stack mobile app, a C/C++ project configuration command line tool, and my personal website (https://skylarcupit.com) and resume. All of those can be demoed on request in an interview.

That being said, I hope to take the next step in my software development career as a member of your team. I would be grateful for the opportunity to participate in an interview to determine whether I am a good fit for your team. The best way to reach me is through email at (Skylarcupit@gmail.com). I look forward to your response!

Thank you for your time and consideration,

Skylar Cupit

Career Experience

Mobile App Developer

Freelance (2024-present)

I am currently developing a cross-platform mobile health app from the ground up. The app is designed to help individuals manage their health habits and recovery progress.

Software Engineering Paid Intern

IGT (2018-2019)

Responsible for building an internal management software frontend for the Texas Lottery. The software was implemented from a formal specification using mostly JavaScript and AngularJS 1.

Software Engineering Paid Intern

IGT (Summer of 2018)

Designed and wrote a custom tool which retrieves data from a BitBucket repository and generates a "proof of code review" PDF file. The file showcases essential information such as code diffs, user comments, and other relevant info. Used NodeJS + Express for the backend, and AngularJS 1 for the frontend.

Projects

Full Stack Mobile App

React Native, Kotlin, TypeScript

Full-stack developed a mobile app for managing client info and PEMF therapy session notes. Uses a Kotlin + Spring Boot backend and a TypeScript + React Native mobile app frontend.

C/C++ Project Configuration Tool

Rust

Designed and implemented a command line tool which generates fully functional CMake configurations for an entire project tree. Some notable features include full dependency graph cycle checks, support for pre-build scripts, and project "feature" configuration akin to Rust's cargo.

Mod URL Scraper

Python, Web Scraping, Automation

Wrote a Python script which extracts Minecraft add-on project URLs from a markdown file, then retrieves each corresponding CDN download URL per add-on, for any version of the game.

Linux Homelabs

Linux, Docker

At home, I maintain two general-purpose Linux machines. I mainly use these to self-host useful software for the house (such as a CUPS print server and Samba file share), manage private Git repositories, build and test software for both ARM64 and x86_64, and learn more about UNIX environments. All tasks are done remotely over SSH.

Education

University of Texas at Dallas

2018-2019

Computer Science major.
